Civic-Minded Business Owners Honored Through Scholarship

January 14, 2022

The Community Giving Foundation: Sunbury is pleased to announce a new scholarship fund benefitting students in the Sunbury area. The Robert C. and Elinor L. Zimmerman Scholarship Fund was created by the Zimmerman children—Linda Young, Ann Zimmerman, and Robert Zimmerman, Jr.—in memory of their parents, civic-minded residents and owners of Zimmerman Motors in Sunbury.

Robert and Elinor Zimmerman valued faith, family, education, and a strong work ethic. They overcame struggles to provide for their family while also supporting their church and community. After serving in the army and working in local industries, Mr. Zimmerman was proud to join the family business of selling and repairing vehicles. Once the Zimmerman children were in school, Mrs. Zimmerman joined the office staff. Both enjoyed working with the public and seeing the ways their company grew over the years. Zimmerman Motors is currently in its fifth generation of the transportation business—a long way from making wagons and buggies in the late 1800s.

The Zimmermans were dedicated to building a business that was committed to being loyal to their customers and employees. They often stepped in to help someone in need in the community. The family also valued education and believed everyone should live up to their abilities and do their best. A strong work ethic was the foundation of their business and personal lives. Giving back to the community, in service and financial support, came from the Zimmermans’ hearts as they enjoyed living in the Susquehanna Valley.

“We have been blessed by our parents’ hard work and want to continue their legacy by offering help to someone who also has gifts for working with the public and servicing vehicles. Our hope is that upon graduation, these local students would bring loyalty and a hard work ethic back to the community where they live,” writes Ann Zimmerman, daughter and fund advisor.

The Robert C. and Elinor L. Zimmerman Scholarship Fund will provide a two-year scholarship to a graduating Shikellamy School District senior who is pursuing post-secondary education at a two-year certified or accredited trade or technical school. Consideration will be given to students who have good attendance, good GPA, participation in community service, and zero disciplinary infractions. Through this fund, the family hopes to honor their parents’ commitment to small, local business by recognizing the importance of learning a trade.
