Starting Over With Stability

Many domestic violence survivors leave abusive relationships with little more than the clothes they carry and limited financial resources to secure and furnish a new home. Finding support offered by organizations like Transitions of PA is essential as they heal and find stability again. In 2022, a $10,000 grant from the Women's Giving Circle helped Transitions' rapid rehousing program support these survivors as they began rebuilding their lives.

Through the grant, Transitions assisted 27 households, including 29 adults and 17 children, by providing essential household items to help turn empty spaces into homes. Families received air mattresses and bedding, cookware, dishes, microwaves, cleaning supplies, clothing storage, and other everyday necessities. These items helped families focus their limited income on childcare, transportation, groceries, and other critical expenses necessary to maintain stable housing.

"This funding allowed us to meet survivors at a critical moment, when they were moving into safe housing but didn't yet have the basic items needed to live day-to-day," explained Transitions staff. "Being able to provide those essentials helped reduce stress and gave families a stronger, more stable foundation."

For many families, having these essentials brought peace of mind during a stressful and uncertain time. "Working with my housing advocate and knowing the options they were able to assist me in starting over from scratch, and all the amazing things they got for me, made me cry. I had a bed to sleep in and dishes to eat off, and they were mine. No one could take them from me," one program participant shared.

Because of this grant made possible by Women's Giving Circle donors, families leaving crisis situations were not only able to furnish their homes, but also gain dignity, stability, and a path towards long-term independence. By meeting these immediate needs, survivors are taking the first steps toward financial self-sufficiency and a safe, stable future.
