WHERE GIVING MEETS COMMUNITY
Insights on local generosity, nonprofit work, and the needs shaping our region.

By Danny Hess, Community Giving Foundation marketing assistant

The true work of a mission-driven community begins with a single story. For me, that realization was rooted in the consistent examples set by my parents, who showed me early on that caring for others is a lifelong commitment. Their influence served as a compass, eventually guiding me through a communications degree and into the heart of the nonprofit sector.

That compass first led me to a senior-year internship at Dwell Orphan Care, where the abstract concepts of “impact” met the daily realities of life on the ground. In that space, I saw that mission-driven work isn’t just a strategy; it is a child supported, a family strengthened, and a community showing up for its neighbors in their most vulnerable moments.

It grounded a profound truth in me: nonprofits are the essential architects of our community’s well-being. They are the experts on the front lines, turning raw generosity into tangible change.

My internship led me to my current role at the Community Giving Foundation. As I reflect on my first year here, my perspective on mission-driven work has grown. If my early experiences showed me the power of a single “thread” of impact, this past year has revealed the “loom”—the intricate framework that weaves those individual missions into a resilient regional network.

Moving from the direct service of an internship to the broader lens of a community foundation has been a journey of understanding how individual stories connect to form a larger narrative of progress across the Central Susquehanna region.

On my third day with the Foundation, I saw this “loom” in action at our Annual Meeting. I watched donors, nonprofit leaders, and community partners at every table leaning in and diving deep into our regional needs. It wasn’t just a gathering; it was a collective of diverse voices weaving individual passions into a unified strategy for the region’s future.

At its core, the relationship between the Foundation and our nonprofit partners is built on trust and a collective vision for our region. We act as a bridge, using a data-driven lens to ensure local resources are meeting the most pressing community needs. By connecting passionate donors with expert nonprofit services, we help individuals create a local legacy that provides immediate support today and long-term transformation for tomorrow.

This past year has shown me that local giving isn’t just a tagline; it is a lived reality that unfolds every day in the places we live, work, and play. The Foundation serves as a resource and a connector, proactively identifying gaps and increasing collaboration to solve challenges that no single entity could tackle alone. Behind every fund established is a story of a donor who believes in the future, and a nonprofit expert who knows their mission best.

As I look toward the future, I am moved by the realization that collective generosity creates a lasting impact that far exceeds the sum of its parts. Every contribution and every grant is a chapter in a much larger story of regional transformation.

By working together, we ensure that the legacy of local giving continues to enrich our local lives and strengthen our community—today, tomorrow, and forever.
