Fund Established in Memory of Carol Deforest Locke-Endy

November 15, 2018

A fund has recently been established to honor the life and work of Carol Deforest Locke-Endy. This endowed designated fund will support the Coalition for Social Equity in Carol’s memory.

Carol was committed to interracial, intercultural, and interfaith understanding from her time as a little girl living in an international student boarding house with people from all over the world that was run by her parents in a segregated southern city. That experience helped prepare her for service in the Peace Corps in Brazil and as a Peace Corps trainer, and for her work in Maryland on African-American oral history and social justice projects and in support of Muslims after 9/11/01. In Bloomsburg, she served on the Task Force for Racial Equity, headed up the annual Martin Luther King community program, and worked on interfaith understanding and fellowship with the Coalition for Social Equity.

“It is deeply satisfying to honor her life and work by establishing this fund in her name to further interracial, intercultural, and interfaith fellowship and understanding,” stated Carol’s husband, Mel Endy.

Steve Engelhardt, President of the Coalition for Social Equity, remembers Carol as fierce in her commitment to the causes of justice, especially in terms of intercultural and interfaith practices, and purposeful in holding herself and those she worked with to fulfill action plans. This was especially true with the Martin Luther King community meal and program. “Carol was always eager to learn, to share, to dialogue and to listen. She cared for her husband and family, always with an eye to their welfare. Carol was genuine, true to her roots, her faith, her heart, and quite simply, made the world a better place. The Coalition is grateful for this fund that will benefit our work in perpetuity,” stated Steve.

Memorial contributions can be made to this fund online at csgiving.org, or mail to the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation, Attn: Carol Deforest Locke-Endy Fund, 725 West Front Street, Berwick PA 18603.
